Programme:

Mervyn Day had spent nine seasons at Elland Road, in a career of six hundred and forty senior games. His choice of Leeds United as the opposition in his Testimonial match was not surprising as he kept close ties with the club and culminating in him becoming the clubs Chief Scout in later years. He made a token appearance in the game and after having led his team on to the field he remained for just seven minutes before handing over the goalkeeping duties to Tony Caig, having kept a clean sheeet. His deputy also kept a clean sheet and it was not until the third keeper of the night, Tony Elliott, came on in the fifty-fifth minute that a goal was conceded. David Wetherall headed the only goal of the game in the sixty-second minute. Leeds made just two substitutions with Chris Fairclough replacing Nigel Worthington at Left Half and Phil Masinga coming on for Brian Deane at Centre Forward. Apart for the changes between the posts, Carlisle also brought on Jeff Thorpe for Rod Thomas at Outside Right, John Pearson for David Currie at Inside Right and Richard Prokas for Shane Reddish at Outside Left. Iain Cruikshanks of Darlington was the Referee.
